Gifts from Unexpected Places
Life has a funny way of delivering gifts from the most unexpected places. For many, a trip to the dentist may evoke feelings of stress or anxiety, but for me, it’s become a cherished part of my self-care routine. After all, I smile a lot, and taking care of that smile is a priority! Recently, during my semi-annual cleaning, my dental hygienist shared something that left me reflecting on the true power of our mind-body connection.
As we chatted about the usual topics—life, family, and work—she casually mentioned that she noticed a significant change in the state of my gums in the past eight years. "You can tell you’re less stressed" she remarked. I was taken aback. I knew that stress could manifest in many ways, but I had never considered that my gums could be telling a story of their own.
We often talk about how stress impacts our sleep, skin, or even our weight, but the idea that our oral health could be a reflection of our nervous system’s state was eye-opening. A dysregulated nervous system can present itself in various ways, from digestive issues to tension headaches, but dental health? That was a new one for me.
A regulated nervous system, as I’ve learned, is one that can navigate through various states, including stress, without getting stuck. Over the past few years, I’ve dedicated time and energy to ensuring my system stays balanced, and a significant part of this journey has been my tapping practice. This simple yet profound technique has been a game-changer, helping me release tension, manage stress, and bring a sense of calm to my daily life.
Hearing my hygienist confirm the changes I’ve been feeling internally was a wonderful moment of validation. It’s one thing to know you’re doing the work, but to have it reflected back to you in such a tangible way? That’s a true gift. It was as if my body was sending a thank-you note for all the care and attention it had received.
We often juggle countless responsibilities—careers, families, social lives—and it’s easy to overlook the subtle ways our bodies communicate with us. But those subtle signs, like healthier gums, are worth paying attention to. They remind us that our efforts to care for ourselves aren’t just paying off in the short term; they’re setting the stage for a healthier, more vibrant future.
So, the next time you find yourself in the dentist's chair, take a moment to consider what your body might be telling you. And remember, self-care isn’t just about bubble baths and spa days. Sometimes, it’s as simple as making that dental appointment, practicing mindfulness, or giving yourself the gift of a few minutes of peace.
And who knows? You might just walk away with an unexpected gift of your own.
